VolkerWessels UK: a leading multidisciplinary contractor

Employing around 3,800 staff across the country, VolkerWessels UK brings together best practice through five distinct business units.

Each of the business units delivers quality projects as well as providing specialist skills, plant and equipment — cementing VolkerWessels' position as a significant multi-disciplinary civil engineering and construction group.

The Challenge

Ensuring sustainable, high-quality project management in the built environment

To further its position as an industry leader, VolkerWessels UK identified opportunities to address common quality management issues across the sector.

VolkerWessels UK had already achieved certification to the iconic quality management standard, ISO 9001. However, with quality becoming an increasingly high priority for the construction industry, the organization wanted to go further by focusing more closely on areas of quality specific to the sector. This included meeting the highest standards of project management.

The Solution

Bringing industry giants together to unify thinking and expertise

Built Environment Quality Management (BS 99001) is a sector-specific standard, designed to tackle the complex and multi-organizational concerns which arise during projects.

Certification to Built Environment Quality Management (BS 99001:2022) was developed to help the sector implement the requirements of the new Building Safety Act, which became UK law in April 2022. It was formed in conjunction with industry leaders to supply extra sector-specific project management quality system requirements. VolkerWessels UK underwent a thorough independent assessment to become the first organization in the world to achieve certification to the new standard.

Raising quality management standards in the built environment

Volkerwessels UK's commitment to certification has accelerated its progress and helped them deliver their quality management strategy.
