Electrotechnology

Electrotechnology is the ‘application of electricity in technology ’ or, as the word implies, the union of electricity with the knowledge or use of mechanical arts. It underpins much of our modern lifestyle; without labour-saving appliances, computers and electronic entertainment we would find ourselves back in the days of gaslight and steam; without radio or telephones. Healthcare would revert to the primitive conditions without the means to x-ray, monitor or resuscitate. Electrotechnology does not just provide us with those means, it also provides us with the means to build machines to build the appliances, and research the technologies to design new ones.

Electrotechnology is a fast-developing, high-tech industry spanning occupations in the electrical, sustainable energy, electronic, communications and information technology fields.

As technology changes, the industry will continue to merge and grow, as new fields are developed. Recent new technologies such as data communication, home automation, intelligent systems for industrial and facilities management, fire and security systems continue to be developed and applied.

The electrotechnology industry encompasses the design, installation, maintenance, servicing and repair of electrical and electronic equipment, for industrial, commercial and domestic purposes, and includes light and power, computer systems, wireless technology, network management and solar energy equipment. It comprises communication; distribution and transmission of power; electrical generations; lift, refrigeration and air conditioning engineering; and communication systems including data and computer cabling systems.
