About BS EN ISO 22000

Failures in the food chain supply chain can be dangerous and costly, not only in terms of public health and safety, but also company reputation, financial penalties and shareholder value. BS EN ISO 22000, the standard for food safety management systems, will help to eliminate weak links in the food supply chain and benefit the consumer as well as the business.

Organizations which produce, manufacture, handle or supply food recognize that organizations customers increasingly want them to demonstrate and provide adequate evidence of their ability to identify and control food safety hazards and the many conditions that impact on food safety.

The quality management system standard BS EN ISO 9001:2000 does not deal specifically with food safety, and as a result, many countries have developed voluntary national standards and other documents specifying auditable requirements for food safety management. These different specifications on food safety management have led to confusion and consequently there has been a need to harmonize the national standards at an international level; the development and publication of BS EN ISO 22000 which addresses this need.
