Key scheme features

The Kitemark® scheme for window installations is based on the BS8213-4. It covers a wide variety of aspects, including:

  • Design
Checks are made to ensure the windows and doors are correct for the intended use
  • Surveying
To ensure the windows and doors will fit and open correctly. Also covers risk assessments on the installation process.
  • Installation practice
Including the safe removal of old windows, fixing and sealing of frames, fitting of glazing and finishing trims.
  • Staff training
Surveyors and fitters must demonstrate that they are properly trained and competent.
  • Property care
To avoid damage to furniture, floor coverings and needless damage to decorations.
  • Building regulations compliance
Including fire, thermal efficiency and safety glazing. The scheme also offers the option to carry out Local Authority notification via BSI and the ability to download Building Regulations certificates from BSI's website.
  • Material quality
Checks to ensure windows, doors, glass, sealants and fittings meet the required quality standards.
  • Inspection
To check that the installed windows and doors close and seal properly and have not been damaged during installation.

New build, replacement and commercial markets are all covered by the scheme, irrespective of the types of materials used – PVC-U, timber, aluminium or steel. The main focus of the scheme is on the quality of survey and installation.
