The European Union has issued Directive 1999/36/EC to enhance safety with regard to Transportable Pressure Equipment (TPE) for the inland transport of dangerous goods by road and by rail. The Directive covers the placing on the market of transportable pressure vessels and any valves and accessories attached to them.
This directive has been transposed into UK Law as Statutory Instrument SI 2001/1426. Regulations 1, 2, 10 and 12(1) to (3) came into force on the 3rd May 2001, with the remainder on 1st July 2001.
Compliance to the TPE Directives is achieved by fulfilling the requirements of one of the mandated standards listed in schedule 2 of the regulations.
In the absence of such a code, the Competent Authority (Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in the UK) can be approached to draft a code to the requirements of paragraph 6.2 of ADR (European agreement covering the transport of dangerous goods by road)
BSI has Notified Body status under the TPE for the initial market placement aspects of the Directive.
